Bethwel back on the boards
25th January 2020 – 2018 World Indoor bronze medallist Bethwel Birgen (KEN) started a new indoor season with victory at the first World Athletics Tour event in Boston.
Bethwel and Kenyan compatriot Edward Cheserek built a healthy lead over the rest of the field early on leaving them to work together for a fast time and compete for the win over the final few laps. With 300m remaining Bethwel stepped up a gear to break away and cross the finish line in 7:44.21.
Shamier Little (USA) competed over the less frequently run 300m where the field was split into two heats. Shamier dominated heat 2 winning in 37.07 seconds which placed her second overall.
World Championships 1500m finalist and newest athlete on the PACE roster Ciara Mageean (IRL) showed that she is wintering well with a strong performance in the 1500m. Working her way through the field she ran a 62 second last 400m to get up to third position and with a time of 4:06.42 broke her own Irish indoor record.
After over 3 years of injury woe there was a very welcome return to competition for former World Indoor 60m Champion Trayvon Bromell USA). His run of 6.84 seconds gives his a platform on which to build.
