Hellen finishes season in style
12th September 2021 – At the end of a long hard season Hellen Obiri (KEN) was able to muster one final big effort and take victory at the Great North Run.
Having been postponed last year it was great to see one of the worlds most iconic road races return with over 50,000 runners taking part. One of the amendments necessary to allow the race to happen though was a change of course and the undulating nature of it made it a real test of strength over the final kilometres. After trying unsuccessfully to break away on a couple of occasions, Hellen was finally able to move clear in the last 800m and cross the line in 67:42 and earn her first half marathon victory.
While Hellen is winding her season down, Galen Rupp (USA) is in the middle of his preparations for the Chicago Marathon and he showed his training is going well by taking third place in 61:52.
In New York, the ever popular Matthew Centrowitz (USA) made his sixth appearance at the Fifth Avenue Mile, but despite leading at halfway he finished in fourteenth on this occasion with a time of 3:56.3.
