Home comforts for Hellen
4th October 2020 – World 5000m Champion Hellen Obiri (KEN) made the most of a rare opportunity to run in front of her home fans as she took victory in the 5,000m at the World Athletics Continental Tour event in Nairobi.
Challenging conditions led to a tactical battle up front but Hellen’s speed on the final lap proved decisive as she closed in 61 seconds to cross the line in a winning time of 15:06.36. Winny Chebet (KEN) just missed out on victory in the 1500m but did take second place in 4:06.78.
If the heat and altitude was challenging in Nairobi, it was the rain and the temperature that tested the runners at the London Marathon. Chris Thompson (GBR) used all his experience to run a very sensible race and was rewarded with a time of 2:13:32 and 19th place. Conditions got the better of Vivian Cheruiyot (KEN) and Stephanie Twell (GBR) on this occasion but they will be back to fight another day.
