Diamond League Double
4th July 2021 – The start of July saw two World Athletics Diamond League meetings in quick succession with Oslo playing host on Thursday night shortly followed by Stockholm on Sunday afternoon.
In Oslo, Hellen Obiri (KEN) was back to winning ways as she earned a hard-fought victory in the 5000m. A strong consistent pace kept the lead group on track for a fast time, and it took a 61 second last lap to edge Hellen clear in the home straight to win in 14:26.38.
Perfect weather conditions in Stockholm allowed many of the athletes to show the great shape they are in and Shamier Little (USA) was one of those. A fantastic battle with Dutch athlete Femke Bol over the final two hurdles saw them both produce huge PB’s with Shamier taking second in 52.39 seconds. A time which places her fifth on the all-time list.
Two athletes in hard training block for the Olympic Marathon are Chris Thompson (GBR) and Galen Rupp (USA) and both had tune up runs on the roads at home. Chris took victory in the Great North 10k in Gateshead, while Galen took eighth place in the US National 10k Championships in Atlanta.
