3rd January 2021 – Along with the rest of the world, the athletics fraternity was pleased to see the back of 2020 but World Champion Hellen Obiri (KEN) did her upmost to at least see it out on a positive note.
Running over 10km at the Cursa del Nassos New Year’s Eve race in Barcelona, Hellen had travelled with a fast time in her mind. However, in true 2020 style she sadly tripped and suffered a heavy fall early on and although she picked herself back up the time was gone. Showing her usual grit and determination though, Hellen soldiered on and was still a convincing winner in 30:53.
Starting 2021 in the best possible way was multiple Irish record holder Ciara Mageean (IRL). In a specially arranged elite indoor meet in Manchester (UK) Ciara ran over 3000m and recorded a victory in a European Indoor Championships qualifying time of 8:54.66. We are all hoping this will be the first of many races for our athletes this year.
