Linet Masai is World 10k Champion

In an exciting sprint finish Linet Masai (KEN)overtook world No’s 1 and 2 to win the 10,000m in the IAAF World T&F Championships in Berlin. In the best run of her career Grace Momanyi (KEN) placed 4th less than one second behind. The race started at a solid pace with splits of 9:24 at 3000m and 15:45 at 5000m with the Kenyan girls content to stay towards the back of the 22 women field. With 8 laps to go Linet went to the front and with a series of laps of 71, 69, 70, 71 and 70 whittled teh leading group down to 5 runner – team mate Grace Momanyi and the Ethiopian trio of Defar, Melkamu and Wude. Momanyi pushed the pace with 4 laps to go but entering the last lap there weer still 5 in contention. A frantic last 100m saw the lead change several times with Masai getting to the tape first in 30:51. Full story on www.iaaf.org

Elsewhere Usain Bolt (JAM) cruised through the 100m rounds while Christine Ohuruogu (GBR) and Nicola Sanders (GBR) looked good in the 400m and Leo Manzano (USA)progressed impressively in the 1500m.
