12th January 2020 – World Cross-Country Champion Hellen Obiri (KEN) began 2020 in the same fashion as 2019 with a convincing victory at the World Athletics Cross-Country Permit meet in Elgoibar, Spain.
The 7.6km course includes a steep climb and a stretch on the track each lap, but Hellen negotiated the different terrains and then upped her cadence on the final lap to build a lead. Still full of running as she crossed the line in 25:10, it was a very successful season opener.
2019’s victory helped to propell Hellen to firstly a World Cross-Country and then the defence of her world 5000m title, and with the Olympics later this year she will be hoping this is a springboard to success again.
