Thomas Ayeko (UGA) made a successful start to his winter campaign with victory at the Great Birmingham Run.

Making his debut over the half-marathon distance Ayeko chose to sit in the lead group for the first half of the race but then upped the pace with a 4.29 seventh mile which broke the field. Ayeko looked smooth throughout and pushed all the way to the finish to cross the line in 62:32.

Involved in a great battle for second place was Chris Thompson (GBR) and Addi Abdirahman (USA). With the full support of the home crowd behind him though it was Thompson who was the stronger crossing the line in 63:03.

Ayeko and Thompson will be joined by Emmanuel Bett (KEN) next weekend as all three line up for the Great South Run.

Even closer to home Steph Twell (GBR) raced round the streets where she sometimes trains to take victory in the Cabbage Patch 10 miles. Twell’s winning time was 55:00, nearly a full minute ahead of second.
